Debating Raised Deck vs. Ground-Level? Ask Yourself These Simple Questions

Plenty of homeowners want to enhance their outdoor space by adding timber decking, but there are several decisions they need to make along the way. Before deciding on the type of timber, the orientation of planks and other such issues, you'll need to choose between a raised deck and a ground-level deck.

Truth be told, they're both great options with a long list of benefits. To decide which one is for you, simply ask yourself these questions and pick the option that best matches your answers.

What's the View?

Having a raised deck can be great if you have the view to go with it. If your property overlooks the beach or another area that's nice to look at, choosing a raised deck is a good idea. However, sometimes a raised deck will simply give you a look into other people's gardens, and that's not something your neighbours are going to appreciate.

How's the Weather?

Do you live in a part of the country that often gets quick bursts of heavy rain even during the height of summer? If so, a raised deck is probably a better idea than a ground-level one. Even when the heavens open, water will drain away quickly to leave you with a dry entertaining area. Ground-level decks aren't nearly as high off the ground, so drainage can sometimes be a problem.

How Level Is Your Garden?

Probably the most important question you can ask yourself during this decking debate concerns how level your garden is. Ground-level decks are perfect when you have a perfectly flat outside space to work with. Unfortunately, even the smallest gradient can mean having to level off the ground before starting, which can be both time-consuming and expensive. A raised deck can be built over any type of terrain.

Do You Know You'll Get Permission?

In some parts of the country, it's much harder to get planning permission for a raised deck than a ground-level one. If you're not sure how planning permission works in your area. Ask anyone near you who has had decking put in. If they had to jump through lots of hoops for a raised deck, you might want to save yourself the hassle and choose a ground-level deck instead.

Do You Have Small Children?

Safety needs to be a top priority if you have small children. They will be able to slip through most safety rails, and even slightly older children will often mess around on the deck and put themselves at risk of a slip and a fall. If you're a growing family, choosing a ground-level deck might be a good idea.

Welcome to my flooring blog. My name is Frankie, and I love everything related to decorating homes. I love buying furniture, choosing throw pillows and accent pieces, and installing flooring and other durable elements. Compared to every other element in a room, the flooring has one of the largest impacts. It can brighten a space or make it feel dim and dark. It can make a place feel soft and inviting or cool and modern. It can add a clean look or sadly, make the whole room look dirty. If you want tips and ideas on flooring, I invite you to explore these posts, and I thank you for reading!
